Why Obasogie dumped Insurance for Ethiopian club

The goalkeeper who kept 18 clean sheets—a new NPFL record—last season was a prime target for Enyimba and Rivers United before making the shock move to the East African nation.

While he was rumoured to be leaning towards the exit door in Benin City to join either Enyimba or Rivers, Obasogie committed his future to the Benin Arsenal in a chat with PUNCH Sports Extra.

“Many clubs are actually in talks but there is nothing concrete,” Obasogie told PUNCH Sports Extra.

“Football is everywhere. I just want to keep a good mentality and avoid controversy. I would love to leave Bendel Insurance in grand style, like after an incredible season, such that I will be able to table what I want with a huge financial benefit for the club as well.”

With the NPFL clean sheet record in the bag, the player has finally called it quits with Bendel Insurance, and sources close to him said he fancied the move to Ethiopia due to tempting financial reasons.
