US seeks AGOA penetration in Africa

Hamilton said that the US Congress was working on the modernisation of AGOA, and looking at developing the utilisation of the programme to reach countries in Africa that were not benefitting as much as others.

Participating countries at the 2024 U.S.-Sub-Saharan Africa Trade and Economic Cooperation AGOA Forum, held from July 24 to 26, 2024, resolved to improve their economic partnerships and address challenges to the effectiveness of the investment and trade programme, according to Hamilton.

The AGOA Forum, which was themed “Beyond 2025: Reimagining AGOA for an Inclusive, Sustainable and Prosperous Tomorrow”, saw senior government officials from across the U.S. government and AGOA-eligible countries, representatives from key regional economic organisations, labour, civil society, and the private sector in attendance.

Hamilton noted, “The US delegation highlighted our continued commitment to AGOA and hosted a number of conversations on a broad range of issues, including how to increase the use of the programme, how to better promote worker-centric trade policies and how to better strengthen the partnerships to drive economic opportunity for both Americans and Africans.

“We explored barriers that women, youth, micro, small and medium-sized enterprises in the African diaspora face in accessing trade and investment opportunities. We explored how to better use the multilateral trading system to benefit more people, especially those in underserved communities.”
