Shein to open pop-up store in Mall of Africa next week

Shein is opening up its first-ever pop-up store in SA at Mall of Africa, the Chinese fast-fashion giant said in a statement this week.

The group said the 10-day event between 2 and 11 August promised an "interactive experience for fashion enthusiasts and casual shoppers alike".

The move comes as the government clamps down on import tax rules that have allowed Chinese retailers such as Shein and Temu to bring goods into the country at a lower cost than rivals. From 1 July, parcels Chinese retailers brought in of below R500 would be taxed at exactly the same rate than higher-value imports, namely 45% plus VAT. This comes amid accusations from retailers and union representatives that the retailers have been using an extremely high number of small orders in order to pay lower duties.

Shein said customers would be able to assess the quality of its products firsthand at the pop-up store.
