Pro-chancellors seek end to strike in varsities

Recently, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, and Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions staged nationwide protests, demanding the release of withheld salaries and implementation of agreements reached with the federal government in 2009.

For two weeks, ASUU chapters across the country engaged in protests to sensitise the public about their unmet demands.

SSANU also held nationwide protests on July 9, 2024, across the state chapters of the federation, and a national protest in Abuja on July 18 threatening to go on strike.

A communique signed by the chairman, National Planning Committee of the conference, Prof. Ayodeji Omole, read, “Incessant strike action by labour unions and the attendant consequences on stability, quality, and standards should be discouraged as much as possible. University managements are encouraged to use the available resources prudently to maximise their impact. Pro-Chancellors of State-owned universities should be involved in dispute resolutions and negotiations when trade disputes involving national bodies of labour unions in the universities arise. University Management should ensure that town hall meetings, participatory consultations, alternative dispute resolutions, and due process are deployed to resolve conflicts with labour unions. To avoid conflicts, universities must be administered the way it should be.

“Governments are encouraged to annually review and increase budgetary allocations and consequent release of budgetary allocations to education.”
