Patients voice frustration as drug prices skyrocket

The drug manufacturers in the country have transferred some of the costs to customers, making most over-the-counter medications and injections unaffordable to many.

A nurse with a private hospital in Ikire, Osun State, Mrs Ruth Folosho, told The PUNCH that there had been increased fatalities due to the sharp rise in the prices of drugs in the country.

“The price of Augmentin, a drug used to treat bacterial infections such as sinusitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, ear infections, urinary tract infections and more, has soared by over 700 per cent in one year,” she explained.

According to Folosho, Augmentin 625mg was sold for N3,000 and currently sells for about N25,000.

She stated that many patients were resorting to herbal medication because of the soaring prices of orthodox drugs.
