Paralympics: Nigeria eye more medals on final day

Isau Ogunkunle (para-table tennis bronze), Bose Omolayo (para-powerlifting silver), and Flora Ugwunwa (women’s javelin silver) were all on the podium on Saturday and took Nigeria’s tally to six.

They will hope to add more today when Tokyo 2020 gold medallist and Commonwealth Games champion Folashade Olwafemiayo and Loveline Obiji compete in the women’s +86kg and 86kg, respectively.

Ugwunwa started Saturday’s medals scoop, as the 40-year-old kept her place among the best para-athletes in the world in her event, winning silver in the Women’s Javelin F54 with a throw of 19.26 m.

She placed second behind Uzbekistan’s Nurkhon Kurbanova, who claimed the gold medal with a throw of 21.12 m, setting a new world record in the process and also breaking the Paralympic record set by Ugwunwa in 2016.

Iran’s Elham Salehi took the bronze, recording a distance of 16.24 m.
