Onyekwere celebrates engineering, Olympic feats

“Jumping from Engineer to Olympian. It’s not easy being a full-time engineer and professional athlete. I’m lucky to have an opportunity to pursue both passions. I am happy to have this time off to focus on my Olympic dream. Celebrating everyone who is doing what they love,” stated the American-born track and field star.

It is the former African and Nigerian record holder’s second Olympic appearance, but her first time of participating after being disqualified from Tokyo 2020 alongside other nine Nigerian athletes for not meeting the required number of pre-Olympic dope tests.

One of a few notable Nigerian athletes to have achieved academic excellence, Chioma graduated from the A. James Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland in Winter 2016 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.

She will be looking to make a lasting impression on her Olympic debut in the discus event to be held from August 2 and 5 at Stade de France, Paris, France. The qualification will take place on August 2, while the final holds on August 5.

African champion Obiageri Amaechi and Ashley Anumba are other athletes representing Nigeria in the women’s discus throw at Paris 2024.
