Ochonogor eyes U-20 champs medal

The 18-year-old is Nigeria’s sole representative in the event and emerged as the second-best performer in qualifying across two groups of 24 athletes, trailing only Spain’s Laura Martinez, who led the day with a jump of 6.37 m.

She is also an African Games bronze medallist in the event, thanks to her exploits in Ghana earlier this year.

The automatic qualification standard was set at 6.40 m, which none of the 24 athletes could surpass.

Meanwhile, some other Nigerian athletes who competed on Day 1 of the championship left so much to be desired with their performances.

The day began with the mixed 4x400m relay quartet of Oseiwe Salami, Odot Effiong Udo, Gafari Badmus, and Favour Onyah, who ran a season’s best of 3:25:59 but failed to reach the final after finishing third in their heat.
