NOT GOOD ENOUGH?

The NPFL is now broadcast live by StarTimes after the Pay-TV firm secured the exclusive rights to air the NPFL matches for five seasons for N5. 9bn last year.

Nigerian legend Stephen Keshi named six NPFL players in his final 23-man squad, all of whom, except substitute goalkeeper, Chigozie Agbim, featured as Nigeria lifted the Africa Cup of Nations trophy for the third time in South Africa.

The others are Azubuike Egwuekwe (Warri Wolves), Godfrey Oboabona (Sunshine Stars), Gabriel Reuben (Kano Pillars), Ejike Uzoenyi (Enugu Rangers) and Sunday Mba (Warri Wolves), a one-tournament wonder who scored the decisive goal against Burkina Faso in the final.

Since then, having as many local players in a tournament has been a mirage and seen as a taboo by successive coaches not properly guided by the Nigeria Football Federation.

The last but one handler of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr, sealed the fate of NPFL players as the Franco-German repeatedly harped they weren’t good enough.
