FG urges local refineries to keep sulphur content low

Lokpobiri encouraged refinery operators to comply with provisions of the Economic Community of West African States by ensuring adequate compliance with 50ppm of sulphur content.

The PUNCH recalls that an argument recently ensued when the President of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, accused the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority of importing dirty fuels into the country.

The NMDPRA boss, Farouk Ahmed, denied the claim, saying local refineries’ diesel had high sulphur content.

Speaking at the CORAN summit, Lokpobiri stated, “We encourage refinery operators to comply with provisions of the ECOWAS and the government policies, by ensuring adequate compliance with 50 ppm of sulphur content; implementing strict environmental standards, incentivising the adoption of clean technologies in refining processes, and developing a comprehensive waste management and recycling programme in tandem with our global commitment to net zero by the year 2060.”

The oil minister said the ministry had set up an international emergency committee on home-grown solutions to in-country refining to discourage crude oil theft and illegal refining.
