Edo people must choose wisely in governorship election – Akpata

I am a lawyer, and dispute resolution is my job. We are doing our best to bring everybody together. I must give credit to the Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, who called for a meeting in Umuahia immediately after the primaries to get former aspirants and other people who may not have been pleased with the outcome of the primaries to work with me and ensure victory at the polls.

However, there remains one individual who has gone to court with two matters. I can’t speak about those matters, but the good thing is that judgment has been given in my favour in one; we await judgment in the other, at least at the level of the High Court. Depending on the outcome, we may continue the push for reconciliation.

How do you react to the feeling among some party members that you have taken over the LP structure in the state for personal gains?

I am new in politics. I came into this space as a result of my extreme dissatisfaction with the state of affairs in our country and my state. I am also in the race because I recognise that, to a large extent, being in politics and/or government will allow me to solve some of these issues. The Nigerian Constitution does not recognise independent candidacy; otherwise, I may have considered running as an independent candidate.

I therefore looked at the parties that were on the ground, and the one that resonated with me and aligned with my objectives is the Labour Party. This will not come as a surprise to those who know me because my mindset is ‘live and let live’. I am for the people; I am for making sure everybody is okay. The Labour Party has at the heart of its policies and programmes, the family unit. I am not in the party to hijack any so-called structure but simply to contest and win the governorship election on the 21st of September.
