Climate change threatening water, sanitation facilities – FG

The Federal Ministry of Water Resources in collaboration with UNICEF is reviewing existing WASH facilities’ technical designs, specifications and drawings as a result of the global changing climate to ensure that WASH documents and facilities take into cognisance climate resilience and adaptation.

The National Water Resources Institute was engaged to undertake the review of existing options for WASH facilities designs technical specifications, and drawings currently used for the construction of WASH facilities in communities and institutions.

In his opening remarks at the workshop, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Water Resources, Richard Pheelangwa, said climate change remains the most profound challenge facing humanity at the moment.

He said the validation meeting is to decide on how to produce technical designs of the WASH facilities that will meet global standards, and are climate resilient, gender appropriateness, and inclusive of people with disabilities.

“With the recent climate change effects, these technical designs will facilitate the construction of durable and sustainable WASH facilities in our communities and institutions. Nigeria has committed to achieving universal access to sustainable WASH services by 2030, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals targets.
