Boniface’s talent, skills struck me instantly – Johnson, Leverkusen star’s youth coach

I started my football academy with a small group of young players from my local community and schools around that I used to coach at United High School football field, Akure. I saw their potential and passion for football and wanted to provide them with more structured training and opportunities to play competitively, as well as to help them to overcome social vices. What inspired me to invest in grassroots football development was the lack of opportunities and resources available to young players in Akure. Growing up, I faced similar challenges and knew the importance of having a supportive and structured environment for young players to develop their skills and pursue their dreams.

What were some of the initial challenges you faced when you set up the academy?

Finding a suitable school and location that could accommodate us, and even classrooms, was one of the first challenges we faced. We ended up partnering with a local school, CAC United High School, Akure. They had a large field and classrooms that were not being used in the afternoons. This allowed us to use their facilities at a discounted rate and also provided access to potential students from the school. Also, building a competitive soccer academy requires skilled players. This proved to be a challenge at the beginning because we didn’t have a big budget to attract top talent. And we reached out to local schools, communities and we used a youth competition to spread the word about our academy, hold tryouts for potential players with inter-class competitions and our annual competition. And I was the only one handling all the categories we had then.
