AFCON qualifier: Nigeria eye perfect run against Rwanda

Under the tutelage of interim coach Austin Eguavoen, the three-time African champions put up an impressive performance in the Nest of Champions, where they found the defence of their neighbours impregnable for the first 45 minutes.

Nigeria broke the deadlock on the stroke of halftime, with in-form Ademola Lookman finding the back of the net with a fine solo effort two minutes into the additional time of the first half.

Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen scored the second goal in the 78th minute, delivering a spectacular volley after he was left unmarked in the box.Lookman added the third five minutes later with a clever angled header from Moses Simon’s cross, as Nigeria gained a measure of revenge for their 2-1 defeat to the Cheetahs in a World Cup qualifier tie in Abidjan three months ago.

While it was a fine start for Nigeria, the Wasps exhibited their road bravery by coming from behind to secure a 1-1 draw against Libya in Tripoli last three days earlier.

Sobi Al Dawi gave the hosts the lead in the 16th minute, while Innocent Nshuti drew Torsten Spittler’s side level early in the second half.
