Bawumia vows to create over 1 million jobs in mining sector if elected

The flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has announced plans to reform the licensing regime for small-scale mining in Ghana, aiming to unlock the sector's potential to create approximately one million jobs.

He made this statement during a stakeholders’ durbar in Daboase, marking the beginning of his four-day tour of the Western Region.

Dr Bawumia emphasised the importance of small-scale mining, which has historically played a vital role in Ghana’s economy.

He pointed out that the sector accounted for 43% of total gold production in 2018 and 36% in 2019, underscoring its significant contribution to the nation’s resources.

His administration's proposed reforms aim to enhance the operational framework for small-scale miners, enabling them to work more efficiently and sustainably.
